Youth ALIVE!
Joe Griffin, DrPH, executive director of Youth ALIVE!, unpacks the lifesaving work of this Oakland-based organization that was founded in 1991 and is a pioneer of the community violence intervention field. Youth ALIVE! works to break the cycle of community violence through a comprehensive approach that includes prevention, intervention, healing, and advocacy. By empowering young people impacted by violence to heal themselves and become agents of positive change, the organization supports a thriving community of young leaders who are deeply invested in transforming Oakland’s most violent neighborhoods. After several years of decreasing violence in Oakland, shootings surged to record levels during the pandemic. The grant from the Kaiser Permanente Center for Gun Violence Research and Education will support Youth ALIVE!’s work to mitigate the lingering impacts of this spike in violence and heal the resulting trauma in the city’s hardest hit communities.
