Dr. Regina Miranda, Hunter College

Regina Miranda, PhD, a professor of psychology at Hunter College, discusses her work leading the Laboratory for the Study of Youth Cognition and Suicide. Her research aims to improve the risk assessment, treatment, and prevention of youth suicide, which accounts for about one-third of gun-related deaths among adolescents in the U.S. The grant from the Kaiser Permanente Center for Gun Violence Research and Education will support the study of what makes adolescents think about suicide and how to modify these thought processes. It will also enable the adaptation of risk assessments for Spanish-speakers and efforts to better address the social, interpersonal, and cultural context in which teenage suicidal behavior occurs.
