Medical University of South Carolina, Turning the Tide Violence Intervention Program
Dr. Ashley Hink, Associate Professor of Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), introduces the work of the MUSC Health Turning the Tide Violence Intervention Program, for which she serves as medical director. As a hospital-based violence intervention program (HVIP), Turning the Tide provides violently injured patients who are at risk for reinjury with intensive case management that continues after hospital discharge and includes connections to community-based services that address the interpersonal, social, economic, and environmental risk factors of community violence. The grant from the Kaiser Permanente Center for Gun Violence Research and Education will support a robust evaluation of Turning the Tide to better understand the experiences of its patients and their families, learn from their perspectives, and strengthen both the program and other HVIPs to better improve the health and safety of communities most impacted by violence.
